As such, the science curriculum at Roxbury Latin strives to provide students with practical experience, creating opportunities to further explore and demonstrate theoretical concepts discussed in class。In many cases, students build on what they have learned and choose an area or topic for further detailed exploration。Then they design experiments, conduct research, and test their own hypotheses。In this way, they begin to understand that science is a constantly evolving and dynamic process。

Level 3, Level 2 and Level 1 students must pass at least two experimental science courses from the following courses。Conceptual physics (or honors physics), chemistry (or honors chemistry), and/or Honors Biology -- although most people take three or more。Typically, more than 80 percent of students will take three or four advanced science courses, which also include engineering and environmental science topics。

The standard order of our science curriculum at the high school level is deliberately different。After a year of practical exploration at MSI, students take Honors physics or conceptual physics in senior year, continue with honors chemistry or chemistry in senior year, and Honors Biology or biology in senior year。Environmental science may be studied separately in a Level I course or in conjunction with Honours Biology or biology。工程专题对高二和高三学生开放,但高二学生如果选择该课程,必须与Honor chemistry或化学一起修读;高三学生可以单独修读或与荣誉生物或生物同时修读。

In honors Physics, students will examine the historical development of our concepts of motion, force, energy, light, and electric charge。The course culminates in the study of the structure of hydrogen atoms and atomic nuclei。The study is a prelude to an honours chemistry course in which the boys explore patterns of chemical combinations and chemical energetics relating to the structure of atoms and molecules。The honors chemistry course builds models for a variety of atoms and simple molecules, including some organic molecules that are important to biology。With this necessary background in chemistry, boys who study honors biology are able to develop an understanding of the molecular basis of inheritance and the genetic evolution of life。They are also able to relate biochemical processes to the structure and function of living organisms。

Although we use university-level textbooks for electives, these courses are not designed specifically for advanced course exams。Every year, however, some students prepare for and take AP science exams in physics, chemistry, and biology at the suggestion of their teachers。

With the support and encouragement of the Department, students have the opportunity to pursue research during the academic year or during the summer as Richards-M-Whitney Scholars。Several Roxbury Latin School boys have entered national science research competitions, including a Siemens-Westinghouse competition winner and two students who were named top scholars in the 2020 Science Talent Search competition。The Roxbury boys also earned a spot on the U.S. Physics team at the International Physics Olympiad。

    Our 21st century worldIn The World in the 21st Century, students will learn about our interconnected digital world and how they can be creative, productive, safe and ethical citizens in it。Computers, personal devices, applications, and networks have become so easy to use that they no longer require much knowledge of how they actually work。Learning about what happens under the "hood" makes it possible for students to make fuller use of technology, to become creative producers in the digital realm rather than just consumers, and to understand the risks of using technology。Students will learn about transistors, bits and bytes, files and operating systems, and then move on to learning programming languages and ways to control computers。The boys will practice programming in Python, developing an understanding of algorithms, computational thinking and programming structures。They will learn how information moves around the Web, what is the Internet, and what is a web page。They will conclude the rotation by discussing privacy, anonymity, critical consumption, fair use and Internet ethics。

    Design of life。Students study the form and function of living systems。They study the nature of life itself, observing its remarkable unity and incredible diversity。How do they consider Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection explain these features of life and enable us to understand the ingenious design of cells, organs and organisms。They develop an understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry by regularly observing organisms in the laboratory。They used composite microscopes, performed dissections, and built models and simulations to achieve these goals。

    (Year 4) Mathematics - Science Investigation (MSI) Is a year-round lab-based course that provides students with the opportunity to examine how we use energy and materials to shape and control the world around us。The boys do these things in an interdisciplinary context, exploring ideas in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, collectively known as STEAM。Boys are active learners in this course, discovering concepts through investigation and experimentation, and completing projects, often in collaboration, which increase in complexity throughout the year。They are also immersed in a "maker" culture, building creative confidence and using newly discovered skills, tools and techniques to tackle challenging problems。
